Mounjaro 'Now Available' on the NHS – But Is It Really Accessible to You

From 23rd June 2025, the NHS has officially launched Mounjaro (tirzepatide) — a revolutionary GLP-1 weight-loss medication — to be prescribed via select GP surgeries. While this is a promising development in the fight against obesity, the reality is that access remains limited, and strict NHS criteria means many who could benefit may still be left waiting.

At Weight Medics, we’re proud to offer safe, expert-led access to Mounjaro without the wait and without the red tape.

What Is Mounjaro – And Why Is It So Effective?
Mounjaro is the most advanced GLP-1 weight loss treatment currently available, with a unique dual-action formula targeting both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. This powerful combination supports significant weight reduction by:

  • Reducing appetite and cravings
  • Improving insulin sensitivity
  • Helping regulate blood sugar levels

Clinical trials have shown that Mounjaro can deliver up to 22.5% body weight loss, outperforming other GLP-1s like Ozempic and Wegovy.

NHS Launch: What You Need to Know
While it’s encouraging that the NHS has recognised the effectiveness of Mounjaro, here’s what many aren’t aware of:

Not All GPs Are Offering It
Despite the official launch, many GP surgeries have not opted into the rollout, meaning patients in numerous areas will still not have access.

Strict Eligibility Criteria
Even if your GP practice does prescribe Mounjaro, you’ll have to meet tight NHS guidelines:

  • A BMI of 40 or over who have at least four other health problems linked to obesity, such as type 2 diabetes;
  • high blood pressure; heart disease; and obstructive sleep apnoea.
  • Proven failure of previous weight management attempts
  • Ongoing support from a Tier 3 specialist weight management service (which has long wait times)

A 3-Year Phased Rollout
The NHS has committed to a three-year phased implementation:

Year 1 (2025): Limited to high-need pilot areas
Year 2 (2026): Expanded access, but still regional
Year 3 (2027): Full availability (subject to capacity and GP participation)

So while the headlines are positive, most people won’t experience real access for months — or even years.
