Orlistat is a brand name for the drug Xenical. Orlistat is a weight loss treatment that can help you reach your goals. They are to be used alongside a low-calorie diet and are ideal for anyone with a BMI of 30 or above.

How Orlistat Capsules work
Each Xenical capsule contains 120mg of orlistat, a weight loss medication that works by blocking fat. When you eat a meal, orlistat prevents your digestive system from breaking down a third of the fat in your food. 

The undigested fat can’t be absorbed by your body and is then passed out of your system when you go to the bathroom. When paired with a low-fat diet and regular exercise, this treatment can help boost your weight loss so you can reach a healthy weight more quickly.

Directions
Always take Orlistat capsules exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your Weight Medics clinician has told you. 

The recommended dose is 1 capsule, taken 3 times a day with your main meal. 

It should be taken with a well-balanced, calorie-controlled diet rich in fruit and vegetables and containing an average of 30% of the calories from fat.

For the best results, you should avoid food containing fat between meals.

If you miss a main meal or eat a meal that doesn’t contain fat, you do not need to take a capsule.

Your healthcare provider might discontinue your treatment if you have not lost at least 5% of your body weight after 12 weeks.

If you forget to take Xenical, you should take it as soon as you remember, providing it’s within 1 hour of your last meal. Do not take a double dose. 

Side effects
Like all medicines, Orlistat pills may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects may include: 

• Headaches
• Abdominal pain
• Urgent/increased need to open the bowels 
• Flatulence (wind) with discharge 
• Oily discharge 
• Oily or fatty stools
• Liquid/soft stools 
• Incontinence 
• Low blood sugar levels 
• Rectal pain/discomfort 
• Bloating 
• Tooth/gum issues 
• Irregular menstrual cycle 
• Tiredness

Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. 

Warnings
Orlistat weight loss capsules may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take this medication if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if:

• You have chronic malabsorption syndrome 
• You have cholestasis

Talk to your Weight Medics clinician if you have kidney problems before taking this medicine.

Using/taking other medicines
If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your Weight Medics clinician before taking this product.

You must tell your healthcare provider if you are taking the following medication:

• Anticoagulant drugs e.g. warfarin
• Ciclosporin
• Iodine salts
• Levothyroxine 
• Amiodarone 
• Medicines to treat HIV 
• Medicines for depression, psychiatric disorders or anxiety

Age restrictions 

This medication is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not take Xenical if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your Weight Medics clinician for advice before taking any new medicine. 

Storage information
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.

Important information
This product is a medicine; make sure to speak to your Weight Medics clinician before taking this product if you have an underlying medical problem or are taking any other medicine or complementary therapy.
