Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is a prescription medication that needs proper storage to stay effective. Get it wrong and you could end up injecting a dose that’s lost some or all of its potency, which means wasted medication and a gap in your treatment.
The good news? Storing Mounjaro correctly is straightforward once you know the basics. And if you’ve already made a mistake, like leaving a pen out overnight or finding one at the back of a warm cupboard, there’s usually a clear answer for what to do next.
Here’s everything you need to know, based on Eli Lilly’s prescribing guidance and what we see patients ask about most often at Weight Medics.
How to Store Mounjaro Before You Open It
All unopened Mounjaro pens should be stored in the fridge until you need them. That’s why when they are delivered, they are packaged in temperature-controlled packaging, to prolong their effectiveness.
Unopened Mounjaro pens should be kept in the fridge at a temperature between 2°C and 8°C. That’s the main shelf of your fridge, not the door. The door is the warmest part and the temperature fluctuates every time you open it, which isn’t ideal for any medication.
Keep the pens in their original packaging. The box protects them from light, which can degrade the active ingredient tirzepatide over time. And never freeze them. If a Mounjaro pen has been frozen at any point, even briefly, it needs to be thrown away. Freezing damages the protein structure of the medication and there’s no way to reverse that.
Stored correctly in the fridge, unopened pens remain usable until the expiry date printed on the packaging, which is typically several months from the date you receive them. Refer to the expiry date on the medication box and device. Once open, the shelf life is 30 days from the date of opening.
How to Store Mounjaro After Opening
Once you’ve used your Mounjaro pen for the first time, you have two options. You can keep it in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C, or you can store it at room temperature as long as it stays below 30°C.
Either way, the pen must be discarded 30 days after first use or after you’ve taken all four weekly doses, whichever comes first. Most patients will use all four doses within the 30-day window without any issue.
A few rules for opened pens: always replace the pen cap after each injection, never store the pen with a needle attached (it can cause leaking, air bubbles, or contamination), and keep it away from direct heat or sunlight.
How Long Can Mounjaro Be Out of the Fridge?
An opened pen can stay out of the fridge for up to 30 days, provided the temperature doesn’t exceed 30°C.
In most UK homes, that’s rarely an issue outside of a heatwave. An unopened pen is a different story. If an unopened pen has been left out of the fridge, the 30-day clock starts from the moment it left pharmacy refrigeration. You can still use it within that window, but you can’t put it back in the fridge and reset the timer. Once it’s been at room temperature, the 30-day countdown is running regardless of whether you return it to the fridge.

"I Left My Mounjaro Out Overnight": What to Do
This is probably the most common storage question we hear from patients. The answer depends on the temperature of the room and how long the pen was left out.
| What Happened | What to Do |
| Opened pen left out overnight, room below 30°C | Safe to use. Continue your doses as normal. The 30-day window from first use still applies. |
| Unopened pen left out overnight, room below 30°C | You can still use it, but the 30-day room temperature clock has started. Use this pen next rather than opening a new one from the fridge. |
| Pen left in a warm car or near a heat source (above 30°C) | Throw it away. Once exposed to temperatures above 30°C, the medication may have degraded and cannot be trusted. |
| Pen has been frozen (left in freezer or shipped in freezing conditions) | Throw it away. Frozen Mounjaro must not be used under any circumstances. |
| Pen looks cloudy, discoloured, or has particles in it | Throw it away. Mounjaro should be clear and colourless to slightly yellow. Any visual changes suggest it’s no longer safe. |
If you’re ever unsure, the safest approach is to contact your prescribing clinic and we can always check with the manufacturer for you. At Weight Medics, our clinicians can advise you quickly on whether your medication is still safe to use.
Storing Mounjaro When You're Travelling
Travelling with Mounjaro requires a bit of planning, but it’s manageable.
For short trips in the UK where temperatures are moderate, you can carry your current pen at room temperature (below 30°C) without needing a cool bag. For anything longer, or if you’re heading somewhere warm, invest in a medical-grade cool bag or travel pouch designed for injectable medications. These keep the temperature stable without risking freezing.
Flying? Always pack Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) in your hand luggage. The cargo hold of an aircraft can drop well below freezing, which would destroy the medication. Keep it in its original packaging and, if asked at security, explain that it’s a prescribed injectable medication. A letter from your clinic confirming your prescription can help, though it’s rarely requested on UK domestic flights.
If you’re using a cool bag with ice packs, make sure the pen doesn’t sit directly against the ice. Indirect contact with frozen surfaces can damage the medication just as much as putting it in a freezer.
What Happens When Your Mounjaro Is Delivered
When Weight Medics dispatches your Mounjaro (Tirzepatide), it’s sent in temperature-controlled packaging designed to keep the medication between 2°C and 8°C during transit. Once it arrives, put it straight in the fridge.
How to dispose of Mounjaro
It’s important to know how to dispose of Mounjaro safely. As there are needles involved, you can’t throw loose pens into your household waste.
Once your pre-filled pen has been used, it’s time to throw it out. Don’t reuse your needle or share it with anyone else. Pens can be used for four doses with a fresh needle each time before throwing the pen away. In this case, there will be an indicator of how many doses are left. If in doubt, always check the instructions on the information leaflet or packaging your Mounjaro came in.
You’ll need a sharps bin to discard your medication properly—never dispose of Mounjaro in your household bin. If you order from Weight Medics, we’ll ensure a sharps bin is delivered alongside your medication, and once full you can contact your local council to collect this from your home.
